Therapy for kids, teens, and the parents beside them.
When a child is struggling, the whole household feels it. I work with children, adolescents, adults, and parents to sort out what's actually going on — and to build on the strengths that are already there. In San Antonio and online across Texas, in English or Spanish.
Grow through. Heal deeply. Bloom freely.
About
Hi, I'm Yami.
Yamilee Gonzalez, LPC
Licensed Professional Counselor · Texas #94927
M.C., Walden University
I'm so glad you're here. My name is Yamilee, though most people call me Yami, and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor working with children, adolescents, adults, and families across San Antonio and the rest of Texas.
Most families don't reach out on a good week. They call after the third meeting with the school, or when a kid who used to talk has gone quiet, or when the same argument has been running on a loop for months. By then everyone is tired, and someone usually feels like the problem. My first job is to take that framing off the table.
I work from a strengths-based perspective, which isn't the same as being relentlessly positive. It means I start from the belief that you and your child already have capabilities worth building on, and that our job is to find them and put them to use. Depending on what's needed, I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused work, motivational interviewing, mindfulness-based approaches, and parent-child interaction therapy.
Parents are part of this — not as observers, but as the people with the most influence over how things go at home. I'll tell you what I'm seeing, what I'd try next, and what I honestly don't know yet.
Services
What I help with
Individual therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. If what you're seeking is not listed, reach out — we will discuss if it's within my scope of practice or guide you toward a better fit.
Children & adolescents
Big feelings in a small body. School refusal, meltdowns, withdrawal, trouble with friends. We work at their developmental level — which for younger kids often means play and parent coaching rather than sitting and talking.
Anxiety & stress
Worry that outgrew its usefulness — stomachaches before school, perfectionism, replaying conversations at midnight. We work on the thoughts and on the nervous system underneath them.
ADHD & focus
Beyond "try harder." Practical structure for homework, mornings, and transitions, plus work on the shame that builds up in kids who've been corrected all day. Parents get concrete strategies, not just a diagnosis.
Depression & mood
Flatness, irritability, dropped interests, sleeping too much or not at all. In teens this often looks like anger rather than sadness. We name what's happening and rebuild momentum in small, real steps.
Anger & emotional regulation
Zero to sixty with nothing in between. We map what happens in the seconds before an outburst and build in a pause — then work on what the anger is protecting.
Family support
The sessions belong to your child, but the change happens at home. Divorce and blended families, a sibling in crisis, communication that's stopped working — I'll help you understand what's driving it and what to do differently between sessions.
Additional areas: bipolar disorder, family conflict, grief and loss, and stress management. Sessions available in English or Spanish.
What to expect
How starting actually works
Not knowing what happens is the main reason families put this off. Here's the whole process.

Schedule your appointment
Book straight through Headway — you'll see real openings and your actual cost after insurance before you confirm. No consultation call to get through first. If you'd rather ask something before scheduling, send a message through the contact form.
-
First session
We start with what's been happening and what you're hoping will change. When the client is a child or teen, this usually begins with the parent or guardian in the room. With younger children it may involve play and drawing rather than direct questions.
-
Finding a rhythm
Most start weekly. As things steady, many move to every other week. Parents get periodic check-ins, so you're never guessing about progress.
-
Tracking progress
We set goals early on, and I monitor progress toward them in every session. Those goals are what we use to talk openly about continuing, adjusting, or wrapping up — so the decision is never a guess.

FAQ
Common questions
My child doesn't want to come. What do I do?
This is normal and not a reason to wait. Reluctance usually comes from expecting to be lectured or blamed. I spend the first session earning some trust rather than gathering history, and I'm honest with kids about what stays private and what doesn't. You can tell them it's one conversation, and they get a say afterward.
How involved will I be as a parent?
It depends on your child's age. With younger children, parents are central — often in the room, since much of the change happens in how you and your child interact day to day. With teens, I protect more one-on-one space but keep you informed about themes, progress, and anything safety-related.
Is online therapy as effective as in person?
For most of what I treat, research finds comparable outcomes. With younger children it can be harder to hold attention on a screen, so I'll give you an honest read after a session or two. Teens and adults often prefer virtual, and we can switch at any point.
Is what my child says confidential?
Largely yes, and that privacy is part of what makes therapy work for teens. The legal exceptions apply to everyone: imminent risk of serious harm to themselves or someone else, suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. I explain these limits to your child directly at the start, in language they understand, so no one is surprised later.
Do you prescribe medication?
No — I'm a counselor, not a prescriber. If medication seems worth exploring, I'll say so and can coordinate with your child's pediatrician or refer you to a psychiatric provider. For something like ADHD, therapy and medication often work better together than either alone.
